A small but vibrant woodland located at the southwest corner of Fort Tryon Park, Cabrini Woods Nature Sanctuary is one of the best uptown spots to look for birds and take in sweeping views of the Hudson River and Palisades. The woodland is connected to the last remaining forested parklands along the Hudson River: Fort Washington Park/Inwood Hill Park/Riverdale Park. Bordered on two sides by roadways, it is an urban forest in transition.
The rich diversity of trees and plants growing in Cabrini Woods supports an abundance of wildlife including over 80 bird species. While some birds like the blue jay and red-tailed hawk can be spotted here year-round, most other species flock to our woods only during spring and fall migrations. Fallen and decaying trees provide vital habitat for birds and other wildlife, including opossums, raccoons, and skunks. To protect the wildlife and preserve the ecological integrity of the area, the woodland interior is accessible only by guided tour.
In addition to being a nature sanctuary, Cabrini Woods serves as an outdoor classroom and ecological learning lab for all ages. Because of elevation changes, the site affords visitors the unique opportunity to view the woods from tree canopy level along the Cabrini Boulevard sidewalk between 190th Street and Margaret Corbin Circle. From this vantage point, one can observe the forest’s surprising biodiversity from above and listen for bird songs in the treetops. Visitors will be able to learn about the birds and ecology of Cabrini Woods from interpretive signage installed along the sidewalk fence.
Through our free public programs and online educational resources, we strive to equip children, teens, and adults with ecological knowledge and activities that they can share with friends and family throughout the year. We also aim to empower people to contribute to the restoration and preservation of this vulnerable forest through periodic stewardship days. For upcoming guided walks, children’s programs, and stewardship events, please see our Events Calendar.
